The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was signed into law on January 1, 1970, and sets forth a national environmental policy for the United States. The intent of the NEPA process is to ensure Federal agencies consider the significant environmental consequences of their proposed actions and inform the public about their decision making. NEPA established the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) to advise agencies on the NEPA process and to oversee and coordinate the development of Federal environmental policy. The CEQ issued revised NEPA regulations (40 CFR 1500-1508) in 2021. The regulations include procedures to be used by Federal Agencies for the NEPA review process.
