BOEM Teacher Resources

To encourage an ocean-literate public and an upcoming generation of marine scientists and engineers, BOEM's Environmental Studies Program-sponsored research results are sometimes used to prepare materials for teachers, including video and audio files. Educators, in collaboration with BOEM scientists, develop materials for formal and informal educators using data or information from actual research projects. Development of teacher resources is often an integral part of the research design. Sample teacher resources are described below. All completed ESP reports are available on-line as full electronic PDF documents in the Environmental Studies Program Information System (ESPIS).

BOEM Posters

BOEM Scientific Posters:

BOEM has produced a set of educational posters to stimulate student interest and conversations about ocean science. Materials include amazing pictures from discoveries made during BOEM-sponsored OCS research, and topic-specific materials on shipwrecks, sea turtles, whales and dolphins, and social sciences.

Energize Your Mind with Ocean Science

Energize Your Mind with Ocean Science:

"Energize Your Mind with Ocean Science" is an animated game produced by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management to test students' knowledge of ocean sciences and energy. It includes terms and concepts in physical and biological oceanography, marine biology, archaeology and social sciences, ecology, geology, energy, mapping and related topics. It is designed for students in grades 3 through 12. Students win points with every correct answer.

Ocean Energy: Energy from the Ocean

Energy from the Ocean:

This is a five-module curriculum for Grades 5-8 drawn from BOEM-funded research on the history of the offshore oil and gas industry in the Gulf of Mexico and is intended to introduce and reinforce key social studies, science, and ocean literacy concepts. It also includes information about ocean energy development careers and is designed to help students draw connections to their own lives and communities. The curriculum was prepared as one product of the Offshore Oil and Gas History Project (Volume 1).

Lophelia II Understanding Deep-Sea Coral Ecology

Lophelia II: Understanding Deep-Sea Coral Ecology:

This is a problem-based curriculum for Grades 9-12 biology/earth science based on  the real-life practice of prioritizing exploratory drilling sites to minimize ecosystem impact. The curriculum was developed as part of the study Exploration and Research of Northern Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Natural and Artificial Hard Bottom Habitats with Emphasis on Coral Communities: Reefs, Rigs, and Wrecks, (also known as Lophelia II). It was funded by BOEM and NOAA’s Office of Exploration and Research, with additional support and collaboration from the U.S. Geological Survey.

Tidepool Math CD Cover

Tidepool Math:

This award-winning math-based curriculum investigates environmental change in California's rocky intertidal shoreline habitat. The K-8 curriculum, introduces students to scientific applications of counting and estimating. The high school curriculum introduces students to simple statistical concepts. Through classroom activities, students will learn that their environment is constantly changing and ways to monitor these changes.
