BOEM entered into cooperative agreements with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego to collect controlled source electromagnetic data (CSEM) for characterizing marine gas hydrate deposits. BOEM has provided funding for efforts in the Santa Cruz Basin on the Pacific OCS and on several occasions in the Gulf of Mexico. This research provides a fundamental understanding of the electrical response of hydrate-bearing sediments and assesses the usefulness of CSEM as a complementary technology for locating and characterizing gas hydrates.
