What Is A Wind Energy Area (WEA)?

BOEM works with its Federal, state, local, and tribal partners to identify areas of the Atlantic OCS that appear most suitable for commercial wind energy activities, while presenting the fewest apparent environmental and user conflicts.

BOEM announced identification of the Massachusetts Wind Energy Area (WEA) on May 30, 2012. The Massachusetts WEA comprises approximately 742,974 acres offshore Massachusetts. The Massachusetts WEA was determined based on Massachusetts Renewable Energy Task Force deliberations and public comments received in response to a Request for Interest published in December 2010 and a Call for Information and Nominations published in February 2012.
