National Academies-BOEM Committee To Cover Marine Mammal Research, Using High Quality/best Available Science, And BOEM’s Future Study Needs

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NAS) will hold the fourth meeting of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) Standing Committee on Offshore Science and Assessment on November 28 and 29, at the National Academy of Sciences building, 2101 Constitution Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C., 20418. The meeting is open to media and the public, although seating is limited. The Academies require advance registration to attend in person.

The public session on November 28 is scheduled from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. EST. The committee will take comments and questions from the media and the public on November 28 from 3:45-4:15 p.m., including those submitted by email to osbfeedback@nas.edu by 3:30 p.m. that day.

The November 29 public session is scheduled from 9:45 a.m-3:45 p.m. The general discussion session, including comments and questions from the media and the public will take place from 2:30-3:45 p.m., including those submitted by email to osbfeedback@nas.edu by 2:15 p.m. that day.

The agenda will cover a recently published report by the National Academies Press on Understanding the Cumulative Effects of Stressors on Marine Mammals; the importance of using high quality and the best available science; and approaches and priorities for BOEM’s future studies plans.

The committee encompasses a broad range of expertise in both natural and social sciences, relevant disciplines within those broad areas, and collective expertise from academia, industry, government, and the non-profit world in all four Outer Continental Shelf regions.
