06/2019 - An article in the June 2019 edition of EOS (pp 34-38) cites a BOEM Lagrangian study on the speed and direction of deep currents in the Gulf of Mexico. In this project, scientists deployed more than 180 acoustic floats to a depth of 1,500 meters (about 4,900 feet) below the surface. The article describes how the acoustic float observing system revealed complex ocean circulation patterns, which are critical to predicting how the Loop Current forms, and how it influences hurricane development and the spread of oil spills. 06/30/2019 - Improved Method to Estimate the Probability of Oil Spill Contact to Environmental Resources in the Gulf of Mexico.
A special issue book reprint entitled Marine Oil Spills 2018 includes an article by
Dr. Zhen Li and Dr. Walter Johnson in BOEM’s Division of Environmental Sciences, Oil Spill Risk Analysis program, entitled, “An Improved Method to Estimate the Probability of Oil Spill Contact to Environmental Resources in the Gulf of Mexico.” The book, published by the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, is an OPEN ACCESS compilation of 14 papers presenting new developments in the field of oil spills, giving insight into the rapidly changing world of oil spill studies and technology.
06/30/2019 - Article on Understanding the Ocean Soundscape by Dr. Rodney Cluck, Chief, Division of Environmental Sciences, and Dr. Jill Lewandowski, Chief, Division of Environmental Assessment, in a special edition of ECO magazine. The special edition was produced for the Effects of Noise on Aquatic Life conference in the Netherlands, July 2019.
05/08/2019 - DEEP SEARCH Study Update - Scientists Discover Deep-sea Tubeworms Living at Seeps 36 Miles Offshore North Carolina, marking the first time that tubeworms have ever been observed in this part of the Atlantic.
04/08/2019 - BOEM Ocean Science Journal - This issue concerns our marine mammal studies - from whales, to sea otters, sea lions, dolphins, porpoises, manatees and other species.
02/27/2019 - Problem Solvers Win NASA Tournament Lab Challenge, Help Improve Animal Tracking - NASA partnered with BOEM to improve our ability to protect endangered and vulnerable species with space technology. Problem solvers around the world participated in NASA Tournament Lab’s Next Generation Animal Tracking Ideation Challenge by proposing small satellite systems to enhance and eventually replace current animal tracking data collection methods.

11/06/2018 - November Science Note on the Gulf of Mexico Marine Assessment Program for Protected Species - The November 2018 Science Note covers the first year of broad-scale research on the abundance and distribution of marine mammals, seabirds, and sea turtles in the Gulf of Mexico from Brownsville, Texas, to the Florida Keys.
09/06/2018 - September Science Note on the Pacific Marine Assessment Program for Protected Species - The September 2018 Science Note covers research on the distribution and abundance of marine mammals and seabirds across the Hawaiian Archipelago and along the Washington, Oregon, and California coast.
08/17/2018 - BOEM and Partners Resume Atlantic Research Aug. 19 - Scientists ship out for a two week expedition to the U.S. mid- and south Atlantic coast.
06/20/2018 - BOEM Ocean Science Journal - This edition of BOEM Ocean Science describes our physical science studies, ranging from ocean circulation to atmospheric sciences.
06/20/2018 - Quarterly Report on Reports posted to ESPIS, FY 18, Q1 - This edition covers 11 reports posted to the Environmental Studies Program Information System from October 1 - December 31, 2017: three from our Alaska Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) region, two from the Atlantic, two from the Pacific, and four national studies.
06/28/2018 - BOEM Announces Winner of Glider Naming Contest - BOEM’s new autonomous wave glider will be the Kody Kruiser, in honor of the late Kody Kramer, a geoscientist in the BOEM Gulf of Mexico region. Known and loved by all who knew him, Kody was a key contributor to the creation of the most detailed regional bathymetry map of any basin in the world.
06/29/2018 - June Science Note on the Atlantic Marine Assessment Program for Protected Species - The June 2018 Science Note is devoted to the results from the largest survey of marine protected species on east coast, the Atlantic Marine Assessment Program for Protected Species, or AMAPPS. Phase I took place between 2010 and 2014 between the Florida Keys and Maine.
