BOEM is responsible for overseeing renewable energy activities on the Outer Continental Shelf, including offshore wind energy development.

BOEM has recently issued two commercial wind energy leases for the "Maryland Wind Energy Area," an area about 10 nautical miles offshore Ocean City. BOEM is seeking baseline data for this area in order to minimize potential impacts from development and fulfill its responsibilities under the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).

To meet these needs, BOEM invited Monitor National Marine Sanctuary to collaborate on an archaeological survey near and within the Maryland Wind Energy Area. The survey will be conducted July 7-17, 2015.

The survey data obtained will help BOEM make informed decisions with respect to protected submerged historic resources that may be affected by commercial wind energy development. The results will be used to decide whether identified geophysical targets are actually historic resources that should be protected under NHPA.
