Background

On December 12, 2012, DOE announced award funding for seven proposed “Offshore Wind Demonstration Projects” off the Nation’s coasts. The purpose of these monetary awards is to enhance the deployment of stronger, more efficient offshore wind energy technologies – thereby helping to further lower costs and drive greater performance. This announcement underscores the Obama Administration’s all-of-the-above strategy to expand domestic energy development.

Three of these projects are proposed on the Federal Outer Continental Shelf (i.e., offshore Maine, Virginia, and Oregon). In BOEM's Pacific Region, Principle Power received a grant for design of its WindFloat Pacific Demonstration Project proposed to be sited offshore Coos Bay, Oregon.

BOEM will work with DOE and the Oregon Renewable Energy Task Force to evaluate this project under our established planning and leasing processes for promoting responsible wind energy development.
