Federal researchers to host open houses
in Nuiqsut and Barrow Jan. 20 and 21
HOW DO FEDERAL RESEARCHERS...
- monitor food security in Beaufort communities?
- understand fish and marine mammal behaviors in the Beaufort Sea?
- identify ice hazards, improve spill modeling, or detect contaminants near offshore oil facilities?
Over the last few decades, federal researchers with the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) have dedicated a huge amount of effort to study the unique environment of the Beaufort Sea.
In fact, since the bureau's Environmental Studies Program was launched in 1973, BOEM has invested more than $475 million in coastal Alaska research -- much of it in the Beaufort. This year alone the agency is managing more than 50 ongoing study projects.
On Jan. 20 and Jan. 21, some of these researchers will visit Nuiqsut and Barrow to answer questions about their studies and talk about their research in a relaxed, informal setting. Everyone interested in these issues is welcome and invited to attend.
