On March 9, 2026, BOEM published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to update offshore oil and gas financial assurance requirements.
BOEM has extended the public comment period and will accept comments on the proposed rule through 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on May 15, 2026.
This extension provides the public additional time to review and provide input on the proposal, which aims to modernize BOEM’s evaluation of financial risk and reduce costly regulations on the offshore oil and gas industry, while maintaining strong taxpayer protections.
