Studies Inform Future Energy Decisions on Outer Continental Shelf

WASHINGTON - The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) will hold the next meeting of the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Scientific Committee on May 13-15, 2014, in Reston, Virginia.

The committee is chartered under the Federal Advisory Committee Act to advise the Secretary of the Interior, through the BOEM Director, on the scientific quality and value of BOEM’s Environmental Studies Program for the purpose of informing decisions on managing offshore energy and mineral resources. BOEM is a leading contributor to the growing body of scientific knowledge about the nation’s marine and coastal environment, covering physical, biological and social sciences.

The agenda will include remarks by BOEM Acting Director Walter Cruickshank, after which Chief Environmental Officer William Y. Brown will address the committee on issues and challenges BOEM is facing and present recent accomplishments. BOEM headquarters and regional Environmental Studies Program studies chiefs will update the committee regarding pertinent OCS activities and discuss proposed studies plans for fiscal years 2015-2017 to address the Bureau’s most pressing scientific information needs.

Scientific Committee membership consists of approximately 15 non-Federal voting members with the scientific competence, reputation within their field of expertise, and ability to represent important elements of BOEM’s research and science information efforts. The committee also includes two Federal ex-officio nonvoting members.
